Another successful Red & Silver Match! The McLean Wrestling Family continues to grow and our alumni becoming more involved. We had 50+ alumni come back this week and a packed gym for the wrestle-offs, captains announcement and showcase matches.

McLean takes 3rd in Battle at the Bridge!
50+ Teams from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, DC, New York, etc competed at Woodbridge Senior High's Battle at the Bridge. McLean had 14 wrestlers compete, 8 still going in day 2, 5 medals, 2 in the semi-finals and the 126lbs Champion, JACOB DALY! John Drury, Will Lewey took 3rd place, Phillip Davis finished 6th, and Tavian Melvin finishing 8th.

Smoky Mountain Duals
After a few years off, the team returned to Tennessee for the Smoky Mountain Duals. Representing VA competing with teams from TN, KY, WV, FL, AL, GA, and SC with Middle School duals and College Duals happening on both sides. Going 4-2 in our pool, falling to Cabell Midland, WV(59-16) and Johnson Central, KY(49-24) we crossed over in the 5th/6th place match up against Pigeon Forge, TN. (45-24) finishing in 6th in the HS Division.
They did enjoy their first trip to Buc-ees and strolling through downtown Gatlinburg.

NOVA CLASSIC 2023
8 McLean Wrestlers make it to day 2, bringing home 6 medals. HWT-John "JD" Drury and 215-Will Lewey taking 3rd, 126-Jacob Daly taking 5th, 165-Easton Johnson and 190-Will Olson finishing 6th, and Ryan Curry wrestling up as an extra finishes 7th at 165lbs.

Our McLean Wrestling Family continues to grow... The 2023 version of our Alumni Appreciation Event was well-attended and our group continues to grow. Every Year the SATURDAY AFTER THANKSGIVING at NOON we hold our Wrestle-offs, announce our team captains and showcase our past, present and future. We often have alumni come back to compete with current starters, youth wrestling exhibition matches. Our favorite part is getting to see the dozens of alumni that continue to return. They may not all be able to stay for the group photo, but we hope you plan to join us again next year!

10 McLean Wrestlers(9 scorers) competed in the 41-team King of the Rock tournament at Rock Ridge HS during winter break. Finishing 14th out of the 41 teams. 4 wrestlers making it to day 2, and Boss finishing 3rd (losing to the Champion from Lightridge) at 150lbs, Luke Dettleff finishes 4th in 5-3 match at HWT, and Will Lewey finishes with a fall for 5th place at 190lbs.

11 McLean Wresters were one of 18 teams at Wakefield HS that competed Saturday in the Vic Blue Memorial JV Tournament.
Champions: Sophomores Connor Bo(150) and Nolan Ho(113), Tavian Melvin(106), Walker Johnson(120) and Max Kusano(132) took 3rd. Rakan Sweidan(126) and Thomas Goodwater(175) finished 4th.

5 wrestlers made it to day 2 of the Nova Classic bringing home 3 medals. Luke Dettleff(sr) placed 5th at 285, Will Lewey(soph) placed 8th at 190lbs, and Easton Johnson(jr) placed 8th at 144lbs.

Silver Team pulls out a close one in the final match 24-20
The McLean Wrestling family hosts another successful Red & Silver Match. This was our annual alumni event where we showcase some of our future highlanders, announce our team captains, the current lineup, wrestle-offs and often some alumni. Great to see the support every year and hope everybody continues to stick around.

A Busy Day!
64 kids present Tuesday for hydration testing, fundraiser, team rules & nutrition speech, and team pictures ahead of Meet the Coaches Night. Varsity guys even squeezed in singing happy birthday to coach Mills in the hall while wearing their singlets. *Unfortunately, no video of that one!*

The Saturday tradition continues with 5 of our coaches spending Saturday with our boys at practice. Jason working with son Easton, while Aidan Mills, Beau Jackson and Baker Casstevens running things. Congratulations to Washington-Lee High School for winning their second straight Liberty District Championship ahead of McLean finishing second. McLean claims three district championships and advances 11 of their 13 wrestlers to next week's Region Tournament.

In a first for McLean, we competed against Bishop O'Connell in the beautiful Koons Athletic Center during school at 1:30pm on Wednesday, December 5th. An amazing atmosphere as the student body came down to support their wrestling team! McLean wins after getting out to a huge 39-0 lead. Starts the season 1-0 in Team competition.

Senior, Peggy Zeng, is the first female wrestler to complete a season for the Highlanders. Peggy wrestles up a weight class and places 4th for All-State honors in the girls tournament.
Newest Member of the Century Club: Calvin Zug!
In his fourth year wrestling on a stacked Varsity lineup, the former Conference Champion and 4 year starter becomes the member of the "Century Club" with 100 varsity victories. We are proud of the former Lions Wrestler, now team Captain. He followed up the celebration with an encouraging speech for his (all underclassmen) teammates. Congratulations to Calvin and the Zug Family all in Ashburn for the event with the chance of it happening today. Cal didn't disappoint as he finished the match in Tech/Pin fashion! The team was hyped!

After the threat of snow, the tournament was shrunk to accommodate a one day event. If you made the quarterfinals; you remained in the tournament. If you've lost just one match; you were all of a sudden eliminated. Even with the tough luck event, the Highlanders brought back 4 medals. 106lb FRESHMAN - Ethan Scurlock (7th), 126lb Junior - Justus Porter (7th), 132lb Junior - Zach Chung (8th), 138lb Senior - Calvin Zug (4th). 2017 Red & Silver Match - Alumni Appreciation Event
McLean Wrestling program thriving with the largest team in decades. Highlanders roster exceeds 50+ for the first time with only 2 returning Seniors. The youth movement has arrived, but these alumni are making them earn it. We were extremely thankful to have all of the McLean Wrestling Alumni in the house to join us for the showcase and luncheon. As the McLean Wrestling Family continues to grow, we hope this event continues to grow as well.
Ryan and Danny McMahon, cousins of former McLean Wrestling standout and current D-1 wrestler at Clarion University, teamed up for a 2 against 1 match that was a good way for Cochise to work off Thanksgiving dinner before reporting back to practice.
Current Big East Standout Baseball Player & Two-Time State Champion Conor Grammes returns to excite the crowd and remind former teammate(now Junior) Captain, Yazeed Salameh how it's done. A passing of the torch.

Wade Schalles coming to McLean!
We are honored to be hosting one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. Wade will be conducting a clinic for the McLean HS and Lions youth wrestlers from August 21-24, 2017 in the upper gym.
Wade is an alumni of Clarion University of Pennsylvania; where Cochise is currently competing and representing our program. He's been an NCAA National Champion with 100+ career pins, as well as a World Champion. We couldn't be more grateful to have him share his knowledge with us! |

Highlanders finish 7th in the Region; qualify 4 for the 6A State Tournament along with one alternate. Senior Alex Wassel joins the Century Club en route to his 3rd place finish at 106lbs. Junior Calvin Zug finishes 6th place at 132lbs to qualify for the state tournament. Sophomore Yazeed Salameh finished 7th place at 126lbs and will be an alternate. Seniors, Gavin Legg (170lbs.) and Brendan Grammes (152lbs.) both win their second Regional Championships. Brendan Grammes awarded the 6A North Outstanding Wrestler!

#1 seed, Alex Wassel, claims his first conference championship after three first period pins. Wassel did not allow a conference opponent to score against him this season. Sealing his 99th Varsity win with a 0:57 pin over Langley's Nikhil Patel.

3rd Annual Red & Silver Match a success!
The alumni ends up 0-3 after being defeated by our current wrestlers. The Lions' youth matches kicked things off with appearances from a couple members of the Johnson Family, among other future highlanders wrestlers. Followed by another dramatic Wanzer twins battle (in luchador wrestling masks). From there, our beginners got their first taste of action. Oscar Auza defeated brother Roberto Auza after Roberto had a run-in with the trash can. Gavin Legg defeated Forrest Stieg, and Brendan Grammes defeated his 2x state champion brother, Conor Grammes. An overall success and fantastic to see the dozens of alumni that made it back to watch! (Next year, remember to stay for the group photo! )

Missing both Shaan Malhotra (113) & 4th seeded Calvin Zug (120) due to illness, riding McLean's 5 finalists, the team earns another 2nd place finish to Whitman HS. Conor Grammes wins his 3rd Grapple at the Brook Championship. Mack McCune and Brendan Grammes each earning their 2nd back-to-back Championship. Gavin Legg falls 1 point short in a regular decision to Whitman HS in the Finals to finish 2nd place. The much awaited return of Cochise Wanzer sees him atop the podium with his 195lb. 1st Place finish. Ethan Guenther also takes home a medal with a strong 3rd place finish after losing only to Roosevelt's 220lb champion, ranked #2 by Washington Post - Chibueze Onwuka.

David Wells Memorial Duals Tournament @ Louisa County HSHighlanders competed in a 16-team Duals event this past weekend going 6-1. Missing starting 126 & 195, they made it to the finals against Patrick Henry (Roanoke) and fell short 39-34. The finals match was full of excitement going back and forth as the Highlanders were up 34-33 going into the final match of the weekend. A great performance by both teams. Congrats to Patrick Henry HS!

Inaugural Red & Silver Match a huge success!A big thank you to everyone that came out to support us as we showcased the talented student athletes in the McLean community. We had a packed house! The "Lions" and the "Force" youth wrestling programs were well represented with 5 matches. A barn-burner between the Wanzer twins with a 12-11 finish. We had 11 matches battled after that. Including a mystery guest that got his "second wind" late in the match, but still falling to Brendan Grammes. And capped it all off with a tough fought 1-0 victory between Conor Grammes and Gavin Legg. It was great to see all of the alumni and community come out to support the Highlanders' wrestlers. Can't wait to do it again next year! |

Conor Grammes joins CENTURY CLUB
Junior, Conor Grammes, captures his 100th win this week on his way to winning the Battle at the Bridge 24-man tournament. Only the 6th wrestler in McLean's history to reach such a feat. He joins Jason and Justin Johnson, Troy Hayre, Jeremy Bussard and former teammate Forrest Stieg.

After going 3-2 at the Virginia AAA State Tournament, Conor Grammes, takes home a medal for placing 7th. The tournament was held in Norfolk, VA at Oscar Smith High School.
After a tremendous High School wrestling career, McLean's 2nd state qualifier, Forrest Stieg, had a solid showing going 1-2. Falling one match shy of medaling. He finished his 4th season with 110 total career victories. He is only the 5th wrestler in McLean High School history to reach such a tremendous feat.

McLean places 8th in Northern Region Tournament.
Freshman Region Champ!One week after claiming his first Liberty District Championship, Conor Grammes wins his first Northern Region Championship in his first year in High School. Along the way, Grammes did not allow a single point to be scored against him en route to his 45th victory of the season in the Regional Finals.

3rd Place FinishForrest Stieg places third at the Northern Region Tournament. Stieg never trailed in a single match throughout the entire tournament. Following an unfortunate circumstance, Forrest was DQ'd in the quarterfinals while leading 12-1. Overcoming the DQ, Stieg wrestled his way through 5 wrestlers to reach 3rd place, and a gain his way to the State Tournament.

McLean Wins 2013 Liberty District Championship!!!!
Only entering 12 wrestlers into the tournament, the Highlanders put 6 wresters in the finals, taking 4 District Championships, and 2 District Runners-up, along with 4 other placers. The Highlanders' 10 medalists qualify for the Northern Region Tournament.
